GLENN M. STEIN, FRGS, FRCGS

Polar & Maritime Historian / Author / Speaker

Glenn “Marty” Stein is a Florida native and a descendant of Colonel Francis Eppes I (c. 1597-1674) and Lieutenant Colonel Francis Eppes II (c. 1628-78) of Jamestown, Virginia Colony, the first of the original 13 British colonies in America.

A Polar and Maritime Historian, Stein has sailed to the Canadian, Danish, and Norwegian Arctic, the Falkland Islands, South Georgia Island, and many Antarctic destinations.

Stein has researched maritime and polar history since 1975, and regularly publishes in journals, magazines, and online. He is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society (FRGS), Royal Canadian Geographical Society (FRCGS), Life Member of the American Polar Society, member of the Orders and Medals Research Society (UK), and the Life Saving Awards Research Society (UK). Appointed the website polar historian for the International Polar Year 2007-2008 (IPY), he curated the exhibit, The Lady Franklin Bay Arctic Expedition (1881-84) and the First International Polar Year, at the University of Central Florida. In acknowledgement of his contributions during the IPY, he received the Certificate of Appreciation from the World Meteorological Organization (Switzerland) and The International Council of Science (France).

The author of over 70 articles and papers, his two-part “The Voyage of HMS Investigator (1850-54): Solving the Mysteries of the Arctic Meritorious Service and Gallantry Medals,” was awarded the OMRS Journal Prize 2008-09. The 2021-22 Prize was also awarded to him for “The Creation of the Scott Memorial Medal of 1913”.

Stein’s first book, Discovering the North-West Passage: The Four-Year Arctic Odyssey of H.M.S. Investigator and the McClure Expedition (McFarland, 2015) was launched at the Library of Congress in October 2015. Honors received for this work include the John Lyman Book Award 2016, Honorable Mention of the Keith Matthews Award for Best Book 2016, finalist for the Anderson Medal 2016, and

he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society. The book was placed in the Library of Congress and the Royal Library of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at Windsor Castle. Stein has also had three scholarly articles placed in the Royal Archives.

Certificate of Appreciation for the International Polar Year 2007-08 – World Meteorological Organization (Switzerland) and The International Council of Science (France), for curating the exhibit, “The Lady Franklin Bay Arctic Expedition (1881-84) and the First International Polar Year” (University of Central Florida), and his many contributions as the website IPY Polar Historian.
